The Center for Talent Development is a program hosted by Northwestern University for gifted and talented students. In Michigan all students had to take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills to evaluate reading and math proficiency. I am good at standardized tests. Okay, that is a bit ingenuous. I am very intelligent, but my kind of intelligence translates well to being good at being good at taking standardized tests. So, as a child I scored well on those tests and in fifth grade was invited to take the SAT. I think that first time I scored 1050. I was disappointed until my father pointed out that I had scored higher than Terry Mills and Loy Vaught, two incoming Michigan basketball players. I had six more years to either get better at math and reading or grow two and a half feet, and I could get into Michigan.
